1939 Golden Gate International Exposition Charbneau Gold Dollar HK-488 So-Called Dollar NGC MS65, Shevlin-Hyder J1 Variety

The Charbneau dollar was designed and issued by Jules Louis Charbneau, San Francisco fine arts appraiser and dealer, for sale at the Golden Gate International Exposition in 1939-1940. Reverse bust of Pacifica, “Queen” of fair, taken from her full statue, located on grounds at entrance to Cavalcade of the Golden West exhibit. Total pieces struck, both years, 2,500 Gold, sold for $5; 500 Silver and 50 Copper, sold for $1 each. The sale was disappointing and most of issue was unsold and melted.

There were two Gold issues, one dated 1939, other 1940. In 1940, D in 1 D has been replaced by a star, to relieve Secret Service concerns. The 1939 and 1940 Charbneau dollars are rare and in demand, especially those struck in gold.
