1865 REVERSE Lincoln Medal NGC MS62 Proof-Like GW-764 King-856 NICE!!
28mm, white metal, plain edge. High grade, uncirculated with excellent prooflike surfaces. Lincoln has a somewhat cameo appearance. King-856, Baker-240, Cunningham 1-820S, Musante GW-764. Described by Musante as “Very Rare” = Only 2 to 7 pieces struck.
This is the only white metal example at NGC to grade Prook-Like.
It is believed that the engraver took the issuer’s notation, “Reverse Lincoln,” too literally, much to the confusion and amusement of future numismatists. Rulau/Fuld attributed to William H. Key, though the obverse has been paired with several dies cut by George Hampden Lovett.
Obverse: Nude bust of Washington right-facing in center; “George” at left, “Washington” at right”; “First in War, First in Peace, and First in the Hearts of his Countrymen” around.
Reverse: Left-facing bust of Abraham Lincoln in center; “Reverse” above, “Lincoln” below.
Condition: NGC MS62 PL Uncirculated; TOP POP!
Census: (1/0) TOP Pop in proof-like. High grade non-PL is just 63.
Provenance: Ex. J. Doyle Dewitt Collection!! Author of: A century of campaign buttons, 1789-1889; a descriptive list of medalets, tokens, buttons, ferrotypes, and other lapel devices relating to the national political campaigns in the United States from 1789 to 1889, who amassed one of the largest collections of United States Presidential Memorabilia.
